TACTICS CORNER

France vs Germany was the most awaited game of the day. Although it didn’t have the goals the fans would have wanted it was a pretty exciting game of football. Löwe went with a three at the back formation which finally saw Matt Hummels return to the Germany playing XI. Even though Hummels unfortunately scored the own goal in the 1-0 defeat, it was a beautiful performance by him along with Ginter as they made quite a few amazing tackles against an on the run Mbappe. The French attack looked dangerous in the first half with Greizmann, Mbappe, Pogba and Benzema attacking in numbers. Paul Pogba gave another sensational performance in the blue shirt.

The question that needs to be asked of Löwe is that, was it a bad decision not to start Werner tonight? France were playing with a high line and the pace of Werner could have gotten them some better chances. When Werner came on it was already too late as France were already sitting at the back trying to hurt the Germans on the Counter attack. Germany were much better in the second half as they bombed the French box with crosses. Although Germany had more opportunities to score, France had the better chances. Overall it was a well deserved victory for the World Champions.

MOMENT OF THE DAY

One day and 4 billion dollars later, once again Cristiano Ronaldo finds himself creating history. For a long time it seemed as though we were stuck in a stalemate, with easy chances being missed by both Diogo Jota and Ronaldo in the first half.
The first goal of the game came late in the second half as Raphael Guerrero’s deflected shot found it’s way into the back of the net. It seemed as though the game was done for but a Penalty won by Rafa resulted in Ronaldo getting his 10th goal of all time in the European championship and breaking the 36 year old record set by Michael Platini in 84 Euros. He later went on to grab his second after finishing a very well worked move in the box in the 92nd mimute. This was not the only record set by him as Ronaldo also became the oldest player to score a brace in the Euros and along with that he set the record for most Euros tournament (5) and games (22) by any individual player.

SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE DAY

As the entire world got ready for a heavyweight clash between France and Germany, the excitement was perhaps the highest before the starting whistle. A pitch invader took the definition of invader to ‘new heights’ as he ended up parachuting into the stadium and land on the pitch, almost hitting the fans on the way. He was then helped up by Rudiger before the stewards took him away.

Predictions for day 6

The business end of the competition begins today as teams will be looking to secure qualification for the knockout stages and battle for survival. We have a triple header tonight. Firstly Wales and Turkey will take the field in Baku, both teams did not manage to grab the three points in the first game and could be an exciting game of football. Wales should take away all 3 points from this clash.

The second match of the night is Finland vs Russia. In their previous outing, Finland managed to get past a distraught Denmark squad. Russia on the other hand were outplayed by the Belgian side and did not get the chance to prove themselves. The Finnish should win this game as well.

The last game of the night is Switzerland vs Italy. This is going to be a really end to end game as Switzerland missed out on big chances against Wales in their first game and will be battling to tighten their grip on that qualification spot. On the other hand Italy played very well in the second half against Turkey and should manage to get past this hearty Switzerland side. Italy should win the game 2-1.
