Tactics Corner:

It seemed like a tactical mismatch between the 2 teams in the first half, with the Italians applying constant pressure through wings. Turkeys lack of a coherent press made it easy for Italy to push much higher up the pitch, but the Azzuri lacked the final touch. This all changed in the second half when Turkey conceded the first goal of the match in the 53rd minute and that too via an own goal by Juventus centre back, Merih Demiral. This goal ultimately opened the floodgates, and Italy went on to score 3 goals with key performances from Berardi and Spinazzola from both flanks. Turkey’s plan or lack thereof cost them a key tie in the group, and they will have to adjust their tactics to make sure Calhanoglu is more involved in the buildup.

Disappointment of the day:

With the game clearly being defensively set up, it was very crucial for the defenders to be at their best game but sadly it wasn’t the case for the Turks. The way Turkey lost was a big disappointment altogether as they were expected to be the “dark horses” for this competition by many pundits but this performance has thrown a spanner in the works. One performance that particularly stood out was that of 25-year-old left back, Umut Meras who was at fault in two of the three Italian goals. For the first goal, Bad positioning and a costly slip inside the box allowed Berardi to put in a very dangerous ball which ended up inside the goal via a deflection from Demiral. For the second goal, he was again at fault as he failed to close down Berardi, who pounced on this mistake to put in another perfect ball which proved to be very vital for the second goal.

Social Media MomentS of the day:

Although it was a pretty dull affair and there weren’t many entertaining moments, fans made sure that they keep themselves entertained on social media by even the smallest incident they could find. It all started off even before the kick off, when we saw almost everyone losing their mind over a toy car carrying the match ball from the sidelines to the centre circle.

With crowd back in attendance, it was certain that there will be some hilarious moments in the stands and the crowd did not disappoint. One such moment included a young Turkish fan who was caught sleeping on the big screen and particularly encapsulated the mood of all Turkish fans after a rather drab performance.

As the match ended, an outrageous prediction got viral where the person predicted the score and even the goalscorers correctly. YES, EVEN THE OWN GOAL!

Predictions for DAY 2:

Last edition’s semi finalist Wales, start their campaign on day 2 and will be going into the tournament with a lot of expectations. All eyes will be on them and their star players, especially Gareth Bale. But i feel they would be a big disappointment in this match and the Swiss will be able ease past through them. Switzerland have some high quality players in their squad as well and i feel they will turn up for this match. Another game which everyone would have eyes on will be Belgium vs Russia. Although looks like a walk in the park for Belgium, Russians have shown in the last World Cup that they have the caliber to cause some big upsets and i am sure it will be a very close game at the Gazprom Arena, even if Belgium does take all the three points, it will be no easy job for them.
